It all sounds terribly American, Futurology, perhaps it is referred to as future studies or forecasting here in the UK. Regardless of what it should be called it is none the less captivating. In my mind it covers all the topics that capture my imagination, History, Sociology, Technology, Politics, Economics, Ecology and fundamentally thinking. I now feel that I have a career that I am aiming for some way down the line once I have gained a certain level of expertise in my current endevours.
One great source of information that has started this catalyst of research in my mind is a series of documentaries by Dr. Michio Kaku. He breaks down the elements of what will shape our future into 3 sections the intelligence revolution, the biotech revolution and the quantum revolution.
I guess the subject that got me thinking the most initially from a design aspect was that of the intelligence revolution. How our relationship with our gadgets will change as we allow them to become more intelligent and our interaction and thusly our relationship grows stronger. Also, it got me thinking about how our relationship with the physical world will change as we spend increasingly more time forming stronger cyber bonds over our social networks than we do in our physical networks. Will our traditional friday night down the local with the football lads be replaced with sitting alone in your own living room sipping on tins from your own fridge whilst conducting a social interaction between your own avatar and an avatar of your friend who may be in another country in a virtual setting of your choosing. It is quite possible that you would be able to immerse yourself in a sort of video style conference call yet, the visual settings can be personalised by yourselves and you can be projected into the scene.
Anyway, I am sure that what ever the future looks like we will still be short on time like we are today. amd on that note I shall cut my musings short and go to bed. More rambling tomorrow.
